dating back to the 12th century. Scattered in the hills surrounding
Lalibela are several monasteries also well worth a visit.

Fasilidas’ Pool, which is filled with holy water during the Timkat festival
(Ethiopian epiphany), and the beautifully painted church of Debre Birhan
Selassie. A little out of town is Kuskuam, a mystical palace compound
overlooking the city.

believe the Ark of the Covenant is found. There are many sites to visit – the
stelae fields, the tombs of Kaleb and Gebre Meskel, Queen of Sheba’s palace and
much more. From Axum you can explore Yeha and its ancient temple and the rock
churches of Tigrai, often perched high up in the cliffs.
Bahir Dar you can explore the island monasteries of Lake Tana by boat, admire
the hippos and birdlife of the lake, watch the fishermen on their papyrus boats
paddle past and visit the nearby Nile Falls.
